Yesterday was a Czech holiday for St. Mikulas, on which parents pay people to dress up as angels and devils and come to their houses. If children have been good, St. Mikulas&#8217; angels will give them presents and candy.</p> <p>But if they&#8217;ve been bad, the devils will give them potatoes and coal, and leave with a warning that if they don&#8217;t change the devils will return and eat them. This is all a bit scarier than Christmas in America, and children are sometimes traumatized by the intensity with which the angels and devils play their roles. (Don&#8217;t tell, but the locals here have told me that parents will give the actors shots instead of cookies behind the children&#8217;s backs&#8230;;) )</p> <p>Everywhere here in Prague is now lit up with Christmas decorations- the stores all have icicle lights, the town squares have set up Christmas markets, and for such a secular country there seem to be quite a few Nativity scenes. It&#8217;s making me miss home&#8230;I can&#8217;t wait until Christmas. I&#8217;m doing my gift search on Sunday.</p> <p>I will leave for London on the 14th.
